Breakthrough Minneapolis at Blake (formerly LearningWorks)

 Student Application 2022-2023

Application Deadline:
Early Action -  January 30, 2023
Final Date to Apply -  March 15, 2023

Thank you for your interest in Breakthrough!  Students and parents should carefully read all of the information below.
Who we are: Breakthrough Minneapolis offers a challenging, fun and inclusive academic enrichment program to a diverse group of motivated and high potential middle school students from Minneapolis Public Schools, setting them on a path to college.

Breakthrough is seeking sixth and seventh graders enrolled in Minneapolis Public Schools who are motivated to learn new things, be part of a fun and supportive community, and who want support as they navigate through school and make plans for high school and college.

Our Commitment to YOU:
We are committed to offering students up to  six-years of free academic enrichment and postsecondary support.  If you’re accepted into Breakthrough, we commit to offer you:
  • Six years of tuition-free academic enrichment, from 7th grade through college enrollment, equal to over 500 hours of programming and support.
  • Free student transportation to and from the program during both the summer and school year program.
  • Free breakfast and lunch during the summer, and free snacks during the school year.
  • Our “students-teaching-students” model where all of your Breakthrough teachers will be college students or high school students on their own path to college. Many of our teachers are even former Breakthrough students!
  • Small class sizes of 9-12 students
  • Fun, student-centered learning that engages all learning styles and individual talents
  • Curriculum aligned with state standards in core academic areas (Math, Science, Literature and Social Studies)
  • Elective courses in things like the arts, computer science, and athletics
  • Specialized workshops for high school students on things like rigorous high school course selection, college applications, financial aid, and more – we won’t consider our job done until you earn a college degree
Your Commitment to Us as a Student Scholar:
We have high expectations for our student Scholars, and those expectations are matched with our commitment to support you every step oft way.  Part of that high expectation includes regular attendance, participation, and a "challenge-by-choice" attitude.

In order to be accepted into and successfully complete the program, you must be willing to:
  • Attend Breakthrough at least into your 9th grade year  – both summer and school year program.  Summer Program runs Monday through Friday for 6 weeks, and School Year Program is on Saturdays once a month.
  • Be present and participate in each program day. Attendance is expected.
  • Complete assignments from all classes, electives and activities.
  • Participate in College Bound programming as a high school student aligned to your post-secondary plan.

Your Commitment as the Parent/Guardian of a Breakthrough Scholar:
As your child’s first and most important teacher, we need your partnership and support in order to ensure your child has the best possible experience with us. On average, 98% of our Breakthrough students graduate high school, compared to 74.24% for MPS as a whole. That doesn’t happen without a strong partnership with you.
If you’re child is accepted into Breakthrough, families commit to:
  • Sign a data release form so Breakthrough Minneapolis can collect academic performance data from Minneapolis Public Schools.
  • At a minimum, attend enrollment and graduation events with your child.
  • Maintain open and consistent communication with Breakthrough so that we can provide the best possible learning experience for your child.
  • Ensure your child is participating in programming and completing work as assigned.
  • Share your ideas on other ways in which you or your family hope to engage.

We, at Breakthrough Minneapolis, are committed to supporting all of our student scholars to reach their full potential. We are looking for students and families who are looking for the same. We don’t require certain grades - we require commitment and motivation.

Breakthrough is committed to selecting a class of students who approximate the ethnic, racial, religious and cultural diversity of our city.  Breakthrough accepts students regardless of race, creed or color; we are committed to selecting a diverse group of students who benefit from the program.
